ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh praised quarterback Justin Herbert and others who were stuck on an elevator for two hours at the team hotel in Dallas. The incident happened the night before a preseason game against the Cowboys. Harbaugh says “11 or 12 of our players” were on the elevator along with Jeri Fouts. She’s the wife of Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts. Harbaugh says he almost ended up on the elevator that got stuck. The Chargers beat the Cowboys 26-19 in their preseason finale.

Lake Mary, Florida, rallies to beat Taiwan 2-1 in 8 innings to win Little League World Series title

Lathan Norton scored from second base on an overthrow at first as Lake Mary, Florida, rallied Sunday to beat Taiwan 2-1 in eight innings and claim the Little League World Series championship. This is the first championship in nine tries for Florida, which also came from behind in its 10-7 semifinal win over Texas on Saturday, scoring five runs in its final at-bat. Taiwan was a dominant team at the LLWS from 1969, when it won its first championship, to 1996, when it claimed its 17th. But it had only made the title game once since, in 2009, a loss to California, before Sunday.

Florida beats Texas 10-7 in Little League World Series semifinal and will face Taiwan for title

Luis Calo hit a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning as Lake Mary, Florida, beat Boerne, Texas, 10-7 on Saturday in a wild game that sent the Southeast region representative to the Little League World Series championship. Florida will take on Taiwan, a 4-1 winner over Venezuela, on Sunday afternoon. It will be the first appearance by a Florida team in the title game since 2003, when East Boynton Beach fell to Musashi-Fuchi of Japan, 10-1. The lead changed three times in the final two innings.

Caeleb Dressel looks to end Olympic swimming career by racing ‘splash-and-dash’ event in LA in 2028

Gold medal swimmer Caeleb Dressel is already making plans for the next Olympics. The 28-year-old Dressel says he would like to end his competitive career racing the 50-meter freestyle in Los Angeles 2028. He says it “has always been one of my dreams to compete on American soil at a championship meet.” Dressel was at Daytona to serve as an honorary official for NASCAR’s Cup Series race. He has nine Olympic gold medals and one silver. He won the 50-meter freestyle in Tokyo in 2020, but finished sixth in Paris after taking a year off. He brought home three relay medals.

Aidan Birr made a 44-yard field goal as time expired and Georgia Tech upset No. 10 Florida State 24-21 in the first major college football game of the season. Coming off an undefeated regular season, but with a remade roster, the Seminoles tied the game at 21 with 6:33 left in the fourth quarter on a 15-play touchdown drive that included two fourth-down conversions by DJ Uiagalelei. Florida State never touched the ball again, and Birr came on with 5 seconds left on the clock to drill the winner.

Ohtani hits grand slam in 9th inning, becomes fastest player in MLB history to join 40-40 club

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit a two-out grand slam in the ninth inning for his 40th homer after earlier stealing his 40th base, lifting the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night. The Japanese superstar became the fastest player in major league history and sixth ever to reach 40 homers and 40 stolen bases in a season. He’s also the first Dodger to do so. He broke the mark of Alfonso Soriano set in Game 148 for the Washington Nationals in 2006. Ohtani did it in his 126th game and the team’s 129th. In the fourth, Ohtani reached on an infield single leading off against Tyler Alexander and stole second during Freddie Freeman’s at-bat.
