TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Next Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will announce the team’s 53-man roster, trimming down from the 90 men currently fighting to make the team.
For some, like wide receiver Mike Evans, a roster spot is already locked in. For others, like undrafted free agent Kam Johnson, the team’s Friday game against the Miami Dolphins will be their final chance to show they belong with the Bucs.
Johnson – an undrafted free agent from Barton College, a Division Two school — knows the odds are stacked against him.
“I definitely feel like there’s a chip on my shoulder coming from a Division Two school,” Johnson said. “I just keep my head down and work.”
Johnson, who has impressed in training camp, is fighting for one of the final spots at Wide Receiver, which may be the deepest position on this Buccaneers team.
Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are locked in as the team’s starters, while third-round pick Jalen McMillan and second-year player Trey Palmer are fighting for the top backup spot. Johnson is fighting with Ryan Miller, Rakim Jarrett, Cody Thompson, Raleigh Webb, Tanner Knue, Cephus Johnson III, Latreal Jones, and veteran Sterling Shepard for one or two spots at the bottom of the depth chart.
However, Johnson is focused on achieving his lifelong dream of playing in the NFL.
“I play like it’s a game every day in practice…I’m grateful,” said Johnson.
