SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — The Florida Florida man who was left seriously hurt after an alligator attack over the weekend had his arm amputated, according to NBC affiliate WESH.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said the Florida man’s arm was amputated from the elbow down.
Officials said the Florida man was swimming at Lake Monroe on Sunday around 2 a.m. when he was attacked.
“Alligators are naturally very weary of people, they’re not really looking to harm us in most cases… A lot of cases with alligator bites, a lot of times it’s a case of mistaken identity,” FWC’s Lauren Claerbout told WESH.
Claerbout said when humans feed the gators, they lose their fear of people and learn to associate them with good. Gators will then go after people, mistaking them for a meal.
The FWC is still investigating the attack.
