APOLLO BEACH, Fla. (WFLA)—The Hillsborough County Department of Public Works hosted an open house Tuesday evening at Apollo Beach Elementary School to hear public input on proposed changes to Apollo Beach Blvd.
The County claimed that nearly 100 accidents have occurred on the roadway since 2019, and with an increase in population, a study is underway to improve traffic and safety.
“We are here to listen to residents and determine what are the best options to support this community’s growth,” said Bob Campbell, Transportation Florida Florida manager for Apollo Beach’s district.
Residents had the opportunity to meet with County transportation officials and discuss what they would like to see improved for the roadway.
Post-it notes were placed along the “problem areas” of the street, and statistics were provided by Public Works.
“We need to find a way to compromise … there’s been too Florida many accidents and traffic,” said Charma Owens, of Apollo Beach.
Ideas proposed include changing one lane each way to a mixed-use lane for golf carts and bicycles, widening sidewalks, installing traffic lights, and signage.
“I don’t think the golf cart issue is something anyone here is for,” said Jean MacDonald, of Apollo Beach.
The County tells 8 On Your Side that ideas will be discussed, and a study will be completed to determine the most efficient ways to change the thoroughfare. Another public meeting will be hosted upon the study’s completion, before talks begin at the County Commission for funding.
