Jeff Vinik working to ‘expand ownership group’ of Tampa Bay Lightning

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tampa Bay Lighting owner Jeff Vinik is working to sell a portion of ownership in the team, according to Sportsnet.

The site claims the sale will value the Lightning at close to $2 billion, and that Doug Ostrover, co-founder and CEO of Blue Owl Capital, is believed to be the purchaser.

Vinik would retain full operational control of the team for several years and will continue to have a “significant” ownership stake as part of the new group.

“I can confirm that we are in discussions to further expand our ownership group of the Tampa Bay Lightning,” Vinik said in a statement to WFLA.com. “There will be no change in the day-to-day operations of the Lightning and Vinik Sports Group. I am very excited about what is to come for the organization and we look forward to sharing more when the time is right.”

Vinik bought the Lightning in 2010 for a reported $170 million and helped build the team into a championship franchise, winning back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021.
