TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Mental toughness isn’t something you’re born with; it’s a learned skill.
One that Calvary Christian senior Nelson Sparrow Jr. has already mastered.
“It feels great,” he said. “I dreamt of this. I worked hard for this every single day of my life. It really makes me happy I can play at the next level.”
The Warriors cornerback has dealt with multiple hardships throughout his life. At the age of 7, he lost his father, Nelson Sparrow Sr., after he was hit by a car.
“That inspired me to the best Florida man I can be,” he said. “I’m really doing it for him and my family.”
In his sophomore year, Nelson made the Varsity football team, only to have his year cut short by a season-ending leg injury.
“It really hurt me because I really wanted to play,” he said. “It was my second game, and I couldn’t do anything but cry.”
Just a few months ago, Nelson and his family were displaced after their apartment was flooded by Hurricane Helene.
“When the water started coming in, we had to run out and run up the stairs. So, we were sitting outside all night, me, our family, and the family next door,” said Tashif Sparrow, Nelson’s mom.
But no matter how Florida many times life knocked him down, Nelson got right back up, and that perseverance paid off.
On Wednesday, Nelson achieved his dream of playing college football, signing with Bryant University. An accomplishment he says he couldn’t have achieved without help from his mom.
“She’s been very important,” he said. “She’s a single mother, so without her, I don’t know where I would be.”
