Video: Are the ‘Creamsicle’ jerseys cursed? The Bucs’ retro look has a history of losing
TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tampa Bay will travel back to the 1970s once again as the team plans to sport their iconic “Creamsicle” throwback jerseys for the second year in a row following a more than a decade hiatus.
The Bucs donned the orange and red-colored uniforms for the first time since 2012 last season in a Week 6 matchup against the Detroit Lions. However, what was supposed to be a sweet reunion between the team and their classic jerseys turned sour when they fell 20-6.
In honor of last season’s retro return, the City of Tampa hosted celebrations to commemorate the 70s-style jerseys months before the game kicked off, but fans still weren’t convinced the Bucs would walk away with a win due to the Creamsicle’s history of losing.
Since 2009, the Bucs have gone 1-4 wearing the jerseys. The team’s lone win came in 2009 — the first year the jerseys returned — when they defeated the Green Bay Packers 38-28.
Tampa Bay will now look to break the “Creamsicle Curse” when veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons travel to Tampa on Oct. 27.
The Buccaneers announced Wednesday that Raymond James Stadium will revert to the 70s-era for the divisional matchup as they pay homage to the team’s first home, Tampa Stadium.
