TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Humane Society of Tampa Bay needs your help locating the person who threw a kitten out of a moving car Tuesday afternoon.
In a video posted to the Humane Society’s Facebook page, someone was driving down the 1900 block of Columbus Dr. just before 4 p.m. when they threw a kitten out of a moving car.
The Humane Society initially offered a $500 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the person who did this. The reward has since been increased to $6,000, thanks to a contribution from PETA.
Ornella Varchi, Chief Development Officer with the Humane Society of Tampa Bay says the approximately five-week old male kitten is doing well, all things considered. He suffered cuts on his paws and a bloody nose.
Varchi explained that good Samaritans who saw the cat thrown into the street immediately jumped into traffic to save him. However, the car was gone quick enough they weren’t able to get a good description.
“It makes us feel very angry and very sad that somebody would harm an animal or, put it in harm’s way,” Varchi said. “When it can be just as easy as driving up to our shelter and handing the animal over to us.”
Abandoning an animal is a misdemeanor punishable by jail time and up to a $5,000 fine. The Humane Society hopes to press charges if they find the person responsible.
The kitten will be placed into a foster home until he is eight weeks of age and then will be put up for adoption.
Anyone who may have information for the Humane Society is asked to call them at 813-774-4309.
