ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – Marc Shoosmith was stunned in January when the first toll violation rolled in.
“I laughed,” Shoosmith said. “I thought, “What the heck is this?”
The violation showed a semi-truck rolling through tolls in South Florida. The bill was sent to his business address at St. Peter Motorbikes, but it was addressed to an old business.
Shoosmith says he called FDOT and was told not to worry about it. It was an obvious mix-up. He laughed again and thought everything was fine.
But what happened next was no laughing matter. For five months, he received violations. He said he was bounced back and forth between FDOT and the DMV.
“They can’t explain it and nor can the DMV, so that’s when I thought, ‘I’d Better Call Behnken,'” he recalled.
After we got involved, Shoosmith’s phone started ringing.
A spokeswoman for the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles said the tag in question is not a Florida tag.
Shoosmith says the FDOT called him to say the tag is based in Indiana and they can’t explain why they are sending him these bills. He said he was told to call back if he gets another one.
