TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Hundreds of students gathered Saturday morning at Leto High School in Tampa for a last-minute back-to-school giveaway that included school supplies, backpacks, and medical check-ups.
The event, organized by State Rep. Susan Valdes (R-Hillsborough), is celebrating its 20th year.
“The only way out of tough situations is through hard work and education. It’s all about providing students the tools necessary on day one to start school ready to learn,” Valdes said.
Volunteers packed over 1,000 backpacks in preparation for the event, which had several hundred families lined up ahead of time.
“The parents’ faces, and the relief it gives them financially, is what makes it so special … I smile every time,” volunteer Julio Perez said.
In partnership with the Florida Department of Health and local physicians, medical check-ups and vaccines were also available, as well as resources for families.
“This just makes everything so much easier. I’m so glad the community supports parents and kids,” Neil Rischer, a father of three, said.
