Tampa Bay Sun prepare for historic inaugural match

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Tampa Bay Sun, the area’s first professional women’s sports team, make their debut Sunday.

Ashley Orkus is a goalkeeper for the soccer team. “Being in Tampa Bay, this is an absolutely incredible experience,” she says, “it keeps us up at night, we’re so excited. We’re ready to roll.”

Fans are equally as excited as the team members, Florida many jumped at the chance to purchase season tickets. “This opportunity came along and I was like, I have to be a part of it,” explains Michael Gold.

Riverfront stadium at Blake High School seats 5,000 fans. The facility just underwent $6 million in upgrades including FIFA approved turf.

The new features benefit the team and students at the school. “This is a football field for football season and football practice and then we transform it before our games,” describes Tiffany Hubert, “right after Friday night football we’re coming in and transforming it for our game. Then we set it back up for the students Monday morning.”

Food options at the stadium feature a special selection from Tampa staples, including Bern’s Steak House, Small Giant and Haven. Tickets for games are available at Tickets – Tampa Bay Sun FC.
