Tampa is the 15th most sinful city in the country, according to the number crunchers at Wallethub. The reason why we’re in the top 20 likely isn’t what most people would think – the number of strip clubs here.
Wallethub compared 182 cities, including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state, and scored them using seven key factors:
1) Anger & Hatred
2) Jealousy
3) Excesses & Vices
4) Greed
5) Lust
6) Vanity
7) Laziness
31 metrics, graded on a 100-point scale, were used to determine the ranks of those cities, with a score of 100 representing the highest level of sinfulness. The overall score for each city is based on its weighted average across all metrics, and that score was used to rank the cities.
It was determined Tampa ranked 15th, with a “vice index” of 48.09. But “lust” isn’t what put us on top. It’s actually “vanity.”
Here’s how the metrics were broken down.
Vanity was ranked based on beauty salons per capita, tanning salons per capita, and Google Search Interest Index for “Top 5 Plastic Surgeries.” This metric measures search interest for the five most common plastic surgery procedures: breast augmentation, liposuction, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery and facelift as a share of the national average. Using these indexes, Tampa ranks 8th in the nation.
Lust was ranked based on adult entertainment establishments per capita; teen birth rate; and most active Tinder users. Tampa ranked 11th in this category. There are three cities on the list with more adult entertainment establishments than Tampa: Las Vegas, Portland, and Atlanta.
Tampa ranks 43rd on the list when it comes to laziness. That number’s based on the share of adults not exercising; average weekly hours worked; volunteer rate; average daily time spent watching TV; and high school dropout rate.
When it comes to excesses and vices, Tampa’s 50th on the list. That category took into account the share of obese adults; fast food establishments; excessive drinking; number of adult smokers; coffee drinkers; marijuana users; retail opioid prescriptions; drug overdose deaths; and debt-to-income ratio.
Tampa ranks 61st in jealousy, a category based on thefts; identity theft complaints; and fraud.
In the greed category, we’re in the 95th position. Greed takes into account casinos; charitable donations as share of income; and the share of the population with gambling disorders.
And finally, Tampa ranks low on the list for “Anger and Hatred,” ranking 111th on the list. This category analyzed violent crimes; sex offenders; the bullying rate; hate crimes; and hate groups.
