TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg is in full swing, with races happening all weekend as drivers look to start strong in the NTT INDYCAR Series.
Gates opened at 8:30 Friday morning as the Grand Prix has taken over the streets of downtown St. Pete.
Friday, drivers will be taking to the track for practice, as well as a few qualifiers, before the first USF2000 race at 4:20 p.m.
More than 150,000 people are expected to join in the three-day event.
Kim Green, owner and CEO of Green Savoree Racing, said they expect visitors from all around the world.
“March in St. Petersburg Florida is a great place to come if you’re in from the midwest or Canada,” Green said.
Parking is available for racegoers at Tropicana Field lots 1 and 2, and a free shuttle will take you to the Grand Prix. Make sure to plan for traffic and security.

“Friday, it’s open seating so you can sit in any grandstand,” Green said. “We have grandstands in turn one, all along the front straightaway, and grandstands on turn 10 and there’s great general admission viewing as well so come out and try it and I think you’ll find you want to come back Sunday.”
Plan for it to get loud, as cars will reach speeds as fast as 180 mph. Bring earplugs to protect your ears.
Strollers are allowed for children, and make sure your bag is no larger than a backpack. Refillable water bottles and sunscreen are recommended.
