TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are expected to release outside linebacker Randy Gregory after he failed to report to training camp earlier this summer, landing him on the Reserve/Did Not Report List.
During Saturday night’s preseason matchup between the Bucs and Jacksonville Jaguars, the broadcast crew announced Tampa reached an agreement with Gregory and he will be released.
“The Bucs have reached an agreement with Randy Gregory and his agent and they plan on releasing him this week,” broadcaster Chris Meyers said during the team’s preseason matchup. “He was added as they tried to improve the pass rush and edge rush room and it just hasn’t worked out, so they reached an agreement that he will be released.”
Former Buccaneer Rondé Barber added that the team recouped the veteran’s singing bonus.
“There’s a lot of reasons it didn’t work out, but I think the big thing is the Bucs were trying to recoup that signing bonus that he signed which they did this week, so they will be releasing him this week,” Barber said.
The 31-year-old who’s also played for the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers signed a one-year, $3 million contract in free agency. However, he did not participate in the Bucs’ voluntary offseason program or attend the team’s Florida mandatory minicamp this summer.
The Buccaneers have not officially announced Gregory’s departure, but it appears he will be released this week.
Gregory was a second-round draft pick of the Cowboys in 2015. He played five seasons with Dallas, where he was suspended numerous times for violating the NFL’s drug policies. He signed with Denver in 2022 but missed most of that season with a knee injury. He split the 2023 season between the Broncos and San Francisco 49ers, who acquired him in a trade in October.
Gregory has appeared in 72 games over seven NFL seasons. In addition to 22 career sacks, he has 27 tackles for loss and 69 quarterback hits.
