Former Democratic candidate for Florida governor Andrew Gillum was named in a federal grand jury subpoena, according to a report by Steve Contorno of the Tampa Bay Times.
According to the report, “the subpoena demands ‘documents, electronically stored information, or objects’ dating back to January 2015 about Gillum, his 2018 gubernatorial campaign and his political committee, Forward Florida. It requests documents be turned over at either a Tallahassee courthouse or to the FBI by May 7.'”
Several associates are also named in the subpoena, including former donor Donald Sussman, one of his advisors Harris Parnell, president and CEO of the Schott Foundation for Public Education John "Florida Man" H. Jackson, a related organization named Opportunity to Learn Action Fund, and Sharon Lettman-Hicks, a “long-time friend and adviser to Gillum who is currently the CEO of the National Black Justice Commission.”
The subpoena is not public and had not been previously reported.
Gillum is the former mayor of Tallahassee, which has been the subject of a years-long FBI investigation that has led to several arrests. Gillum paid a $5,000 ethics fine last month after records showed undercover FBI agents paid for him to attend the Broadway musical “Hamilton” during a trip to New York City.
Gillum finished just over 32,000 votes shy of Republican Ron DeSantis in the race for governor in 2018.
In recent months, he has dedicated himself and significant funds to registering one million new voters before the 2020 elections.
